IS NISSAN DISCONTINUING THE MAXIMA?
FUTURE PROSPECTS FOR THE NISSAN MAXIMA
Rumors of the demise of the Nissan Maxima have been circulating for a few years, and they have for the most part, in the immortal (pun intended) words of Mark Twain, been “greatly exaggerated.” However, new information continues to come to light. Is Nissan discontinuing the Maxima?

According to a recent report by Automotive News, the Nissan Maxima is indeed slated to be discontinued. There is no specific date for the model’s discontinuation known at this time; it’s still just a rumor. But as more rumors point to this same conclusion, they become ever-more-likely to be true.
WHY IS THE NISSAN MAXIMA LIKELY TO BE DISCONTINUED?
Over time, larger sedans like the Maxima have continued to sink in popularity. More buyers have been opting for the smaller, cheaper Nissan Altima in recent years. The Altima is newer, and slated to receive a mid-life refresh in 2022. It’s also said that a complete redesign of the model will occur in 2025, with an electric incarnation coming along for the ride. That electrified Altima will likely be in the form of a plug-in hybrid.
The latest generation of the Nissan Maxima was launched in 2015, and the model did receive a number of updates just last year. However, there’s no word of a ninth-generation Maxima at this time, and speculators claim a new Maxima wouldn’t make sense in the current automotive climate.
WILL THE NISSAN MAXIMA BE REPLACED WITH AN ELECTRIC SEDAN?
Nissan is slated to launch an all-new, all-electric sedan with styling inspired by the IM sports sedan concept in the second half of 2022. It’s theoretically possible that this EV could get the Maxima nameplate, but it’s unlikely. Nissan will most likely want to take advantage of the new beginning this electric powerplant ushers in by christening an entirely new model.
