Tacoma or Frontier? Let’s see which model delivers the specs and features you need. Rugged and designed for action, the new Frontier vs. Tacoma models have a lot to offer!

Put your pedal to the metal with the 310-horsepower V-6 of the new Nissan Frontier. This 3.8-liter direct-injection turbocharged V-6 engine generates 281 pound-feet of torque to give you up to 6,640 pounds1 of towing strength on its base-level S trim. Upper trims also come with a standard Tow-Haul Mode Switch for better engine response and improved braking while trailering.

The Toyota Tacoma truck houses an i-FORCE 2.4-liter turbo gas engine that gives you 278 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. Enjoy a Toyota Tacoma towing capacity of up to 6,500 pounds2 maximum, depending on the trim. The 2024 model year also offers an available 2.4-liter hybrid powertrain option on upper trims that provides even more power, but since complete specs for this powertrain are not yet available, we’ll have to hold off on that part of the comparison.

Nissan Frontier vs. Toyota Tacoma Off-Road Features

Nissan Frontier vs. Toyota Tacoma Off-Road Features

If you’ve got your eye on a trail-ready trim like the new Frontier PRO-4X vs. Tacoma TRD Off-Road, we’ve got you covered. The Nissan Frontier PRO-4X comes with necessary off-road features like engine-speed-sensitive power steering and Bilstein off-road performance shock absorbers.

Hit the trails with confidence, knowing you also have the handling only an independent double-wishbone front suspension, front and rear stabilizer bar, and overslung multi-leaf rear suspension with a solid axle can provide. With switch-operated two-speed transfer case 4×4, adventure awaits.

Although marketed for off-road action, the 2024 Toyota Tacoma offers fewer off-road features. The SR5 trim gives you an independent double-wishbone front suspension, front stabilizer bar, and leaf-spring rear suspension.

Still, you’ll need to choose the more expensive TRD Off-Road and higher to gain a rear stabilizer and a multi-link rear suspension that the Nissan Frontier offers as standard. The TRD Off-Road does feature Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control, so while it doesn’t offer the robust trail features of the Frontier, it’s still a fun drive.

Nissan Frontier vs. Toyota Tacoma Interior Tech & Design

Nissan Frontier vs. Toyota Tacoma Interior Tech & Design

Base-level Nissan Frontier trims are anything but basic, with high-tech features like Automatic Emergency Braking, a push-button start, an 8-inch NissanConnect touch screen with Apple CarPlay® integration, and remote keyless entry.

Charcoal cloth upholstery gives a refined touch to the S-trim cabin, or level up to the SV to gain Premium Charcoal cloth and a six-way power driver’s seat. Go for the PRO-X and gain a 9-inch touch screen, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and Lava Red interior stitching, or choose the SL for a heated steering wheel, a unique sliding rear window, a power sliding glass moonroof with tilt, and Charcoal leather interior.

Inside the Toyota Tacoma cabin, you’ll also find an 8-inch touch screen, a push-button start, a Smart Key System, and 30 days of Integrated Streaming Apple Music®. Because there isn’t much change in cabin amenities as you move through the Tacoma trims, you’ll have to go to the top of the lineup and choose the Limited for a power moonroof and SofTex-trimmed seats.

Unfortunately, all trims below the Limited feature fabric seats, so even at higher trim levels, you won’t be enjoying leather in the new Toyota Tacoma. Once it’s made available, the top-tier TRD Pro trim will give you a 14-inch touch screen, a Head-Up Display, and a leather-trimmed steering wheel, but this trim, along with the Trailhunter, cannot yet be ordered at the time of this writing.

1Towing capacity varies by configuration. See Nissan Towing Guide and Owner’s Manual for additional information. Always secure cargo.

2Before towing, confirm your vehicle and trailer are compatible, hooked up and loaded properly and that you have any necessary additional equipment. Do not exceed any Weight Ratings and follow all instructions in your Owner’s Manual. The maximum you can tow depends on base curb weight plus the total weight of any cargo, occupants, and added vehicle equipment. “Added vehicle equipment” includes additional standard/optional equipment and accessories added by the manufacturer, dealers, and/or vehicle owners. The only way to be certain of your vehicle’s exact curb weight is to weigh your vehicle without passengers or cargo. [Calculated with the new SAE J2807 method.] Installation of a tow hitch receiver or other accessories located near the rear bumper or side-door kick sensors may require disabling or removing the kick sensor, and the sensor operation setting in your vehicle should be turned off.
